What it is
Lab testing and field evaluation are independent reviews by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory or a qualified field-evaluation body. The lab examines equipment—often solid-fuel commercial cooking appliances or other pieces that lack a standard product listing—against the applicable safety standard such as UL 2162, either at the test bench or at the job site. The result is a written report and a label or tag the City can rely on.
Why it matters to address
Department of Buildings OTCR review and Fire Department sign-offs typically expect the equipment to carry a recognized listing or a passing field-evaluation report. Without that report, applications stall, inspectors leave the equipment open, and Fire Code 609.4.2 violations linked to the appliance stay unresolved. A clean report opens the rest of the approval and registration chain.
